The good ol’ apple pipe has stood the test of time. Apples have been the go-to fruit for diy smokers for decades. The traditional method for making an apple pipe uses an entire apple. This method works, but they tend to be bulky and awkward to smoke. We have a better method. This method is more ergonomic. Plus, you’re left with a few apples slices for a heathy snack to satisfy your munchies. Below is our step-by-step instructions for a better apple pipe.
You’ll Need:
- apple
- knife
- skewer
- paper towel
*If you’re missing any of these items just get creative.
Step 1. Wash your hands and an apple.
Step 2. Cut away one side of the apple. Make sure you don’t cut into the core.
Step 3. Cut the apple down both sides.

Step 4. Cut the end off to make a mouthpiece
Step 5. Use a knife to carve a bowl. It helps to smooth it out with your finger at the end.
Step 6. Use a skewer (or screwdriver, or straighten out a hanger, or whatever) to make a hole through the apple slice. Be careful to line it up properly. It should connect at the bottom of the bowl.
Step 7: You may want to dry out the bowl with a paper towel (or napkin, or your shirt, or whatever) before you pack it. The keeps your bud from getting too wet. Any additional moisture usually dries up from the heat. Some people use tin foil (or sockets, or whatever), but I would advise against that. Just keep it all natural.
That’s it!! Pack it and enjoy. This method is great because you can cut up the rest of the apple, and have a snack while you smoke. When you’re done smoking you can toss your pipe directly in the compost pile (or woods, or whatever). These are typically good for a few smoke sessions. It will last longer if you put it in the refrigerator between smoke sessions.

Great question! A bowl only needs a carb if it has a chamber. Your typical glass spoon has a carb in order to clear out all the smoke left in the pipe. This pipe doesn’t have a chamber so you don’t have to put a carb on it. In a sense, its the same idea as a wooden tobacco pipe. I hope this helps. Thanks for stopping by!

My pot cane in whole dried flowers! But broken up. I’m a newby. My son says he can come break it up and desead etc… for me. With this way, can I just throw a whole dried flower in the bowl& light it?
I would definitely pick out the seeds. They’ll actually explode under heat.
Can’t wait to use this! Going to use a pen shaft for less heat, what about the ash? Wouldn’t I be sucking it and it hitting my throat?
As long as you don’t widen the hole through the shaft then you should be okay. Every now and then a piece will suck through, but I’ll take it over using aluminum or another metal as a screen 🙂
This worked great and wasn’t harsh to smoke at all.
I live in holland so we ussually smoke in skins with Tobacco or in blunt wraps but the apple pipe is my fav. i dont know why but it’s just awesome! and this tutorial is one i’ve never seen before, it’s really good tried it last week. thumbs up!

I don’t quite understand what you mean when it says it should connect at the bottom of the bowl. Should a hole be seen in the middle?
I mean that you want the stem to poke through at the very bottom of the bowl. If the hole connects towards the middle of the bowl then any herb at the bottom won’t smoke very well. I hope that helps. I should make a diagram – it would be much easier to understand that way.
Could I put a socket or extension in the bowl on the apple slice to smoke more bud?
Sure, that would work. I personally don’t like to smoke out of metal bowls, but it would certainly get the job done.

Hi – thanks, I am 49 years old, am trying to smoke marijiana as I have cancer (terminal) and is fantastic for pain!! gosh it is like a light switch, and now I also have some “dead” cancer cells in my tumours and this is the only thing I have been doing differently since my last lot of chemo. (thanks to my son for telling me to give it a go)!! But sorry everyone, I hate the taste, so hoping this might be an option for me to try. I am also chopping up some buds and eating it on my toast with butter……not sure if this will help but have to give everything a go. Thanks again

I’m glad your finding some relief. You have all of my best wishes. As far as taste – most poeple love it or hate it – there’s little in between. Here’s a few options to alter the taste. First, you may want to try a vape. It’s going to have a slightly different and more subtle flavor. Secondly, you may want to try flavor drops. tried it, not bad . just be careful not to inhale some part of the material you are smoking , that can be dangerous (because there is not filter / sifter / cleaner / grid / whatever ) …
