So, you’re getting ready to get a physical. On top of the usual jitters you’re feeling a little uneasy about your recent cannabis consumption. Well, let’s get right to it – will they drug test you in the process? The answer is most likely not. Like, 99% not. The majority of physicals will not run any tests to see if you have any drugs in your system. Taking a sports physical? You’re almost certainly in the clear.
There is a high likelyhood that you will be asked to pee in a cup, however; they are not looking for drugs. They are testing sugar levels, creatine, and maybe even a pregnancy test for females. There are other things that they may look for, but marijuana or other drugs aren’t one of them.
In the rare cases that they do drug test you will be notified beforehand. It is illegal to test someone for drugs without their knowledge and consent (minors do lose some of these right under parental consent). It’s even more illegal for the doctor to discuss the results of a drug test with anyone. Patient-Doctor confidentiality is taken very very seriously.
Most of the time a drug test is included with the physical it’s ordered by an employer, and again – you will be explicitly told that you are being drug tested. Trucking companies and the DOT have been known to order drug tests along with a physical.
If you have been notified that you are going to be drug tested I recommend you check out my article on how to pass a drug test.
