10 Tips on How to NOT Smell Like Weed

how to not smell like weed header

Most smokers like the smell of weed, but that doesn’t mean they always want to walk around smelling like weed. Whatever your reason, if you want to learn some simple tips to keep from reeking of pot then you’ve found the right place.

1. Don’t Stand Downwind

If you’re smoking outside then this is the number one thing you can do to keep yourself from smelling like weed. It’s simple, I know, but we don’t always think about these things when the smoke sesh is happening. Try to stay aware of where the smoke is blowing and don’t be in that spot.

Another tip is to tilt your head up and blow the smoke into the hair. The hot smoke will rise and this will keep you from bathing in the smell. This tip is especially useful on days with no wind.

2. Ventilate, Don’t Hot Box

This is another obvious answer, but one that gets ignored pretty often anyway. If you’re smoking weed inside then do whatever you can to vent the smoke away. Here are a few tips:

  1. Open a window. Bonus points if you put a fan facing out the window. You can blow into the back of the fan and it will carry most of the smoke outside.
  2. Turn on the ceiling fan. This will make it more difficult to blow smoke rings, but it will prevent you from sitting in thick clouds of smoke in a stale room.
  3. Turn on vent fans. These are typically located above the stove, in bathrooms, and some attics.
  4. Blow the smoke up the chimney. This method doesn’t work quite as well as just blowing it out the window, but it is an option if you find yourself inside a place with no windows and a chimney.

3. Use A Smoking Jacket

This idea dates back to old men wearing a protective jacket so their clothes wouldn’t smell like cigars. While the old school style isn’t necessary it is a really good idea to keep a piece of outerwear that you can put on just to smoke. Then, when you take it off you have your fresh clothes underneath.

If possible, it would be best to completely change all your clothes, but this isn’t always a viable option.

4. Make A Sploof

Simply put, a sploof is a container that you blow smoke into to neutralize the smell. They are really easy to make with just a few household items. I’ve already written a post with detailed instructions on how to make a sploof. The quick version is you’re pretty much just stuffing dryer sheets into a paper towel roll.

5. Wash Your Hands & Eat A Mint

Your hands and breath are particularly susceptible to weed odors. Washing your hands is ideal, but if you’re going to be somewhere that isn’t possible then bring some hand sanitizer or lotion.

The mint can obviously be substituted with gum, mouthwash, or brushing your teeth.

6. Put Long Hair In A Pony Tail

Long hair can have a tendency to trap smells. Keep your hair back and away from your face where the smoke is coming from.

Whether you have long hair or short hair it might not be a terrible idea to get a smoking hat to go with your smoking jacket.

7. Keep Your Weed In A Clean, Airtight Bag

It doesn’t matter what precautions you take to not smell like weed if you’re carrying a smelling bag of weed around with you. If you really want to be safe then pick up some reusable airtight bags at a headshop or online. They’ll last a lot longer than a sandwich bag and keep the smell in better. In the end, use whatever you got but do take a moment to think if what you’re using is going to conceal the smell properly.

8. Try A Vape or Edibles

With edibles, you’re guaranteed to not smell like weed. The problem with edibles is both availability and desirability of effects. That is, some people can’t get edible, and other people don’t want edible because it’s not the same feeling as smoking.

A vape is truly a great option if you’re willing to spend the money. The truth is, good vapes aren’t very cheap. Do your research before purchasing a vape.

9. Sprays, Colognes, & Perfumes Oh My

There is no doubt that sprays can help deodorize or in most cases cover up the smell. I mostly want to give a few simple precautions.

Don’t only wear a particular body spray when you smoke. Basically, if you only wear cologne after you smoke it won’t take long for some people to notice that the smell automatically means your high. Wear the cologne, perfume, body spray, or whatever on a more consistent basis.

A special warning for Ozium. This stuff has gotten insanely popular in the smoking community. Now, I can tell you first hand that this stuff does amazing for covering up smells indoors. But, make sure you read all of the warnings that come with the spray. The stuff is super toxic. You are not supposed to go in a room for at least 20 minutes after you spray. Also, wash any areas of your skin that came in contact with Ozium. I would also take extra precautions if pets are in the house. Again, read and follow all safety instructions on the packaging.

10. Air Out

Sometimes it’s just a matter of taking some time to naturally air out the weed smell before you venture out around people. Don’t be in a rush. Take an extra moment to hang out and enjoy your high while you air out.

Some smoke & vapor lingers in your lungs. A breath freshener just covers the smell in your mouth. When you talk or cough some smell still comes out. In addition to the steps listed (a “smoking jacket”, a mint, etc) 3 or 4 slow deep inhalations each followed by a vigorous deep coughs after smoking will expel most of the smell that lingers in your lungs. Additionally I’d suggest face washing, with special attention if you have a beard.
